JOG group size and dynamics

The JOG is designed as an intimate, peer-driven conversation. An ideal group size of 6–12 participants ensures enough diversity of perspective for rich discussion while still allowing every individual to contribute meaningfully. This can be achieved in two ways:

  • A single group of 6–12 people, led by the host.
  • A larger gathering, led by the host for plenary segments, breaking into discussion groups of 6–12, each with its own group lead.

Selecting group leads: If your event has more than 12 participants, divide into groups at the beginning and ask each group to nominate a group lead. The group lead's role is simple: keep time, invite everyone to share, and summarise key points when reporting back to the full group. Group leads do not need to be experienced facilitators.

Groups work especially well when participants share a common purpose or background — business leaders, church leaders, or members of a particular community. This shared context tends to produce deeper and more relevant conversations.

On couples: Where possible and applicable, we encourage participants to attend with their spouse or partner. Decisions about generosity in a household are better made together.

Next step:  Review the facilitation guide and plan your room or virtual space for breakout groups if needed.
