KB-23: Facilitation tips for JOG sessions
Your primary task is to create an environment where the Holy Spirit can work — through conversation, reflection, and story.
Discussion facilitation
- Ask open-ended questions like 'What stood out to you?' and 'How might this apply to your life?' — then offer the questions back to the group rather than answering them yourself.
- Be fully present: avoid distractions and focus 100% of your energy on participants.
- Invite quieter voices gently. Express personal gratitude for each contribution. Affirm openness and vulnerability.
- Avoid correcting, debating, or directing participants on where or how to give.
Environment and atmosphere
- Protect neutrality: no fundraising, no organisational promotion, no pressure of any kind.
- Set ground rules at the start: confidentiality, respect, and no right or wrong answers.
- Pray before and after sessions, inviting the Holy Spirit to guide the conversation.
Pacing and time
- Follow the facilitation guide to maintain structure, but allow space for the group to explore organically.
- For groups larger than 12, split into breakout groups of 6–12 with a group lead for discussions.
- If a question arises that you cannot answer (e.g., a complex theological debate), acknowledge it warmly and suggest the participant speak with a pastor outside the session.
