Handling prayer and Bible reading

Prayer and Scripture are integral to the JOG; approach them respectfully, giving participants freedom to engage at their comfort level.

Each Journey of Generosity session includes moments of prayer and Bible reading. As a host, invite the group into prayer by acknowledging God's presence and asking for wisdom and openness. Encourage participants to pray silently or aloud as they feel comfortable; no one should feel pressured.

When reading Scripture, choose clear, accessible translations and provide context. Ask participants what the passage reveals about God and generosity. In multicultural groups, consider inviting different people to read in their heart language. Be sensitive to denominational differences and avoid preaching or interpreting contentious passages.

If someone has pastoral questions or expresses spiritual distress, acknowledge them and suggest speaking with a trusted pastor or spiritual mentor outside the session. Prayer and Scripture anchor the conversation and remind us that generosity flows from God's grace.

Next step:  Review the Scripture list in your facilitation guide and prepare prayers that fit your group's context.
